The Dallas Foundation Awards Over $700,000 in Spring Grants to Local Nonprofits, Opens Summer Cycle

Twenty-six Dallas County organizations secured support for causes spanning animal welfare to breast cancer assistance. Now, the foundation is gearing up for its Summer Grant Cycle, targeting nonprofits focused on early childhood development, family homelessness, workforce readiness, and more.

The Dallas Foundation, Texas’ oldest community foundation, has awarded over $700,000 to local nonprofits in its Spring 2024 grant cycle, backing 26 organizations doing important work in Dallas County.

On Monday, the foundation announced its latest grant recipients, covering causes from animal welfare to arts and culture to domestic violence programs. While the exact amounts weren’t shared, the average grant was just over $28,000 per organization.

“These grants not only provide essential financial support, serving as catalysts for change across Dallas County, but also stand as a testament to the enduring impact of our donors’ commitment to our community, said Julie Diaz, president and CEO of The Dallas Foundation, in a statement.

The grant cycle is funded by endowments based on donors’ specific interests. These “Field of Interest Funds” support their chosen causes.

Summer Grant Cycle opened for LOIs on July 15

As the Spring cycle concludes, The Dallas Foundation has already begun its Summer Grant Cycle.  The Summer Grant Cycle focuses on the foundation’s strategic priorities, which include ensuring a strong and healthy start for children and fostering community and economic resilience. Nonprofits working in Dallas County are encouraged to apply, particularly those focused on early childhood development, family homelessness, education, and workforce development.

The foundation will accept Letters of Inquiry for the Summer cycle through August 16, 2024, at 5 p.m.

The Dallas Foundation’s Summer Grant Cycle focuses on key areas to address critical needs in Dallas County. Three of these are highlighted on its website:

  • “Strong & Healthy Start for Children” includes early development from prenatal care to age three,  family homelessness, and youth mental health.
  • “Necessities of Life” includes organizations providing essential services such as food, shelter, and healthcare for vulnerable populations.
  • “Education & Workforce Development” includes programs spanning pre-K–12 to post-secondary education, aiming to equip residents with skills for future success.

Organizations selected to move forward will be notified in early September, with a full application due by close of business on Monday, September 23, 2024. Final grant decisions will be made in early December following a Board of Governors meeting.

The Dallas Foundation accepts grant applications through an online portal. Applicants can create an account and access available LOIs and grant applications.

In addition to these regular cycles—typically two a year—the Dallas Foundation has also awarded grants through special initiatives. One recent example is the Racial Equity Fund.  In May, the fund announced it had provided more than $1.5 million to 41 local nonprofit organizations working in areas like housing, education, and healthcare.

Established in 1929 as the first community foundation in Texas, The Dallas Foundation said it has granted over $1 billion to community-centered causes throughout its history.
