A five-year NSF award to the Center for Wind Energy Science, Technology, and Research supports new work using AI to reduce turbine defects, improve reliability, and strengthen the U.S. energy grid.
Ultimately, the offshore turbine designed by UTD Professor Dr. Todd Griffith could reached the stunning height of 900 feet—as tall as a 72-story skyscraper—generating electricity from winds over the deep ocean "miles from the coast and out of view from land."
Offshore wind turbines are a growing ingredient in the race to develop clean and renewable energy sources. But the turbines—which are attached to the ocean floor with cables and "float" on platforms high above—face risks from high winds and harsh storms that lash the open sea. UT Dallas Assistant Professor Dr. Yaqing Jin has found a potential solution inspired by an unlikely source—seal whiskers.
