In April, Mayor Mattie Parker turned on three Bitcoin mining machines in Fort Worth City Hall. Since then, the six-month pilot has netted the city $1,019.31. But the real payoff came when the story swept the country—and companies in California, Massachusetts, Maryland, and New Jersey took interest. “We tallied nearly 753 million media impressions from this project, which has now branded our city as innovative on a global scale," says Carlo Capua, the city's chief of strategy and innovation.

The inaugural Techstars Physical Health Fort Worth Accelerator is kicking off with 10 startups who come from all over the map—from Dallas to cities across the U.S. as well as Canada, Switzerland, and Germany. They'll be taking up residence in Fort Worth for an "intensive" 13-week mentorship program that makes each eligible for $120,000 in seed funding from the UNT Health Science Center and Goff Capital. “We believe that Fort Worth can become the physical health innovation capital of the world, and this is an incredible next step to making that vision a reality,” says Dr. Sylvia Trent-Adams, president of UNT HSC.

Fort Worth’s Panther Island Dream Gets More Real with $403M Federal Funding

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced plans Wednesday to spend $403 million on the final design and build of a 1.5-mile flood-control bypass channel, which will reroute part of the Trinity River near downtown Fort Worth—and create Panther Island. Fort Worth hopes the 800-acre island will become a massive housing and mixed-use entertainment and recreational district, connecting downtown Fort Worth to the city’s cultural district and the Stockyards.
