TWU Aeronautics Takes Flight with ‘Historic’ Doswell Gift, Aims to Soar in Training Pilots

With the aviation industry needing hundreds of thousands of new pilots in the coming decades, Texas Woman's University in Denton aims to soar to new heights in aeronautics education. A $15 million donation—the largest foundation gift in TWU history—will establish the Doswell School of Aeronautical Sciences—and help put more women in pilot's seats from coast to coast.

Dallas-based Ameriflight plans to operate the Matternet M2 drone for commercial delivery—focusing on health care and e-commerce deliveries to customers in dense urban and suburban environments across the country. The approval will enable what Ameriflight calls "the first fully operational, large-scale drone operation in the United States."

Dublin, Ireland-based Manna, the world’s first aviation-grade B2B "drone delivery as-a-service" startup, has begun a trial in partnership with Dallas-based real estate development company Hillwood at its AllianceTexas development in Fort Worth. The trial will initially offer drone delivery to a select number of Hillwood’s residential developments.

Thirty-three years after launching as the world's first industrial airport, Perot Field Fort Worth Alliance Airport now bears the name of the man who believed in its ultimate promise.
"My dad wholeheartedly believed Fort Worth Alliance Airport would be the centerpiece of an unprecedented jobs corridor in Texas,” said Ross Perot Jr., chairman of The Perot Group and Hillwood.

Fort Worth’s Aero Design Labs Aims to Help Delta Air Lines Save Fuel, Reduce Carbon Emissions with ‘Drag Reduction Kits’

Using computational fluid dynamics modeling, Aero Design Labs creates a 'high-definition map" of Boeing 737 aircraft. Then it works with partners to develop a drag reduction kit that can save fuel costs and reduce carbon emissions.
"Each part of the kit plays a part in capturing and redirecting the airflow, providing a holistic solution to reduce drag," ADL's Chief Commercial Officer Chris Jones told Dallas Innovates.

The airport moved up three spots to No. 20 in the FAA rankings. It landed more than 2.4 billion pounds of cargo in 2021, a volume increase of nearly 46% from the previous year.
