The Last Word: Mayor Eric Johnson on New Law Enforcement Training Center Coming to UNT Dallas

The University of North Texas at Dallas and the city of Dallas have announced a $10 million grant from the Communities Foundation of Texas toward the new law enforcement training center coming to the university's campus. Once built, it will become the new home of the Dallas Police Training Academy.

The 180-foot Ryan Tower stands at the heart of the UNT Dallas campus and can be seen for miles in every direction. Funded by a $2 million gift from UNT benefactors Amanda and G. Brint Ryan, the tower is meant to serve as "an icon of the university, a symbol for higher learning, and a prominent symbol of the community it serves." "For me, it symbolizes the heights our students and our future students will attain," UNT Dallas President said at the tower's ribbon-cutting.

The Dallas City Council recently approved up to $31.4 million in tax increment financing for the first phase of the Dallas-based developer's planned mixed-use development near the UNT Dallas campus.

University Hills could ultimately include 1,500 multi-family units, hundreds of single-family homes, 1.5 million square feet of commercial properties, and more than 50 acres of green space.

Emmitt Smith and UNT Dallas Celebrate Opening of New Expansion at Southern Dallas Innovation Center

Dallas political leaders and UNT Dallas officials were among the speakers at the opening. Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith purchased the property in 2019 through his real estate company, E Smith Communities, as a place to build and incubate talent. UNT Dallas has now joined Dallas College and other organizations in setting up programs at the renovated center.
