Fort Worth-based Nacuity Pharmaceuticals won a patent for a method of treating retinitis pigmentosa — an inherited, progressive form of blindness — using an oral antioxidant drug called N-acetylcysteine amide, or NACA.

The patent covers administering a therapeutically effective dose of NACA to patients with retinitis pigmentosa, including cases tied to Usher syndrome, a genetic condition that combines vision and hearing loss. The application was filed in September 2025 and issued in about nine months. G. Michael Wall and Jami Kern, both of Fort Worth, are the listed inventors.

Nacuity develops treatments targeting oxidative stress, a form of cellular damage that plays a role in several blinding eye diseases. The company’s lead therapy, NPI-001, is a tablet formulation of NACA. Dallas Innovates reported in 2022 that Nacuity raised a $16.5 million Series B round led by the Foundation Fighting Blindness to fund clinical trials.

In October 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted NPI-001 a Breakthrough Therapy Designation. This week’s patent adds to an NACA portfolio the company is actively building; a separate NACA manufacturing patent issued the prior week.

Beyond Nacuity, other organizations with notable patents granted this week include:

Voyage Foods Inc., with a patent (No. 12667115-B2) for producing coffee replicas from individual chemical components rather than coffee beans. The Oakland, California-based company lists Dallas resident Daniel Saad among its eight inventors.

Overhead Door Corporation (Lewisville), which had six patents this week, including a dock leveler with a lip extender (No. 12668441-B2) and a low-profile anti-ligature latch handle for sliding doors (No. 12668991-B2).

Pieces Technologies Inc. (Irving), with an AI system (No. 12670975-B2) that generates prioritized clinical summaries of a patient by pulling from both structured records and unstructured notes, then tailoring the summary’s language to its intended reader.

Verily Health Inc. (Dallas), with a method (No. 12671193-B2) for sealing the electrical contacts of wearable or implantable medical devices against moisture and contaminants.

TRAXXAS L.P. (McKinney), with a vertical drive system for radio-controlled model vehicles (No. 12667793-B2). Three of the four inventors are based in McKinney.
