NTT Data Opens North American Innovation Center in Plano

NTT Data is expanding its Plano presence with the opening of a new North American Innovation Center, where it will focus on customer-facing tech including areas like 5G, smart city planning, and “digital humans”—virtual models of the human body for medical research.

The new center will coordinate with five other NTT Data innovation centers in Japan, Italy, Germany, China, and India.

A global IT services firm is looking to research and develop advanced technologies from a new center in North Texas.

Japan-based NTT Data is adding to its Plano presence with the opening of a new North American Innovation Center to develop new technologies and test out use cases for clients.

“Our goal is to bring proactive innovation to our clients,” Eric Clark, chief digital and strategy officer at NTT Data Services, said in a statement. “To do this we must expand our current innovation efforts in North America, by adding research, development and experimentation of advanced technologies into our program to drive rapid evolution and effective digital transformation strategies for our clients.”

From researching 5G to developing ‘digital humans’

Located inside the company’s existing Innovation Studio in Plano—which helps clients solve business challenges and develop digital strategies—the new innovation center will scout, incubate, and scale new technologies to solve those client challenges. NTT Data said the North American Innovation Center will specifically focus on customer-facing tech, including areas like 5G, smart city planning, and “digital humans”—virtual models of the human body for medical research.

The Plano innovation center will coordinate with NTT’s global network of five other centers in Japan, Italy, Germany, China, and India. The company said the goal of the centers is to target technologies it expects to become mainstream in the next five to 10 years, and to generate new business. To do so, NTT says it plans to collaborate on research and development efforts with startups and universities, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab.

NTT Data plans to double Innovation Center team by year end

The Plano center currently has a five-person team that will at least double by the end of the year, according to The Dallas Morning News.

NTT Data is a subsidiary of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp., a telecom giant with more than $100 billion in annual revenue. It has more than 140,000 employees and says it invests around $3.6 billion in annual research and development efforts.
