Coworking space WeWork and international law firm Kirkland & Ellis have signed large leases at the new Weir’s Plaza, a mixed-use development that will be located in the Knox-Henderson neighborhood.
Kirkland & Ellis is one of the nation’s oldest IP and technology practices, and will become the development’s anchor tenant, signing a lease for 65,986 square feet of office space. The firm’s Dallas office opened in July 2018 in downtown Dallas and has grown to more than 45 lawyers.
WeWork will take up 71,598 square feet across three floors in the 250,000-square-foot development, which is already 65 percent leased. WeWork has multiple locations in North Texas, including offices in Uptown Dallas and Plano.
Weir’s Plaza’s mixed-use retail and 12-story office development is scheduled for completion in November 2021.
“It was very important to find something that strikes the right balance for our attorneys, staff and clients. Weir’s Plaza and the Knox-Henderson neighborhood offer something that is extremely unique,” Michael Considine, a founding partner of Kirkland’s Dallas office, said in a statement. “This dynamic and energetic community is a perfect fit for our culture.”
The law firm is expected to occupy the top three floors of the development and will have top-building signage, according to CBRE.
Kirkland is reportedly moving to Weir’s Plaza as a sign of its commitment to strengthen its Dallas branch.
“Kirkland & Ellis is one of the top law firms in the world and we could not be happier to have such a prestigious firm help us kick off this project,” said Tommy Nelson, vice president of CBRE, which is the firm that represented landlord Four Rivers Capital in the lease.
Weir’s Plaza will give Kirkland & Ellis an added benefit for recruiting and keeping top talent in the DFW region, especially with the location’s easy accessibility to the Park Cities, Uptown, and Lakewood areas, according to CBRE.
Kirkland & Ellis has 2,500 attorneys worldwide representing clients in private equity, M&A and other complex corporate transactions, litigation and dispute resolution/arbitration, restructuring, and intellectual property matters.
The law firm has no official company headquarters. Instead, Kirkland & Ellis operates from 15 offices around the world: Dallas, Beijing, Boston, Chicago, Hong Kong, Houston, London, Los Angeles, Munich, New York, Palo Alto, Paris, San Francisco, Shanghai, and Washington, D.C.
Four Rivers Capital is developing Weir’s Plaza on the former location of Weir’s Furniture at 3219 Knox St. in the heart of Knox-Henderson. Weir’s will maintain a retail location in the development.
JLL Capital Markets announced Tuesday that it had secured construction financing for Weir’s Plaza’s ownership.
