This Saturday, more than 1,000 university students from across the U.S. will be burning the midnight oil at UT Dallas—and then some.
Participants in the 24-hour HackUTD hackathon will be staying up all night to build apps, hardware, and more for corporate sponsors. The largest university hackathon in Texas. the event is slated to feature more than 200 projects while offering over $80,000 in prizes.
In past years, HackUTD events have included a challenge from Goldman Sachs to develop an AI application that predicts company earnings and financial performance using alternative data sources such as news sentiment and social media, the university said.
Another past challenge from Plano-based Toyota Motor North America asked students to build a mobile app to optimize the experience for drivers or passengers, by leveraging industry trends including electric vehicles, generative AI, or cybersecurity.
Funimation founder to be keynote speaker
Gen Fukunaga
The keynote speaker at this year’s HackUTD will be Gen Fukunaga, the pioneering founder of Funimation, which transformed North America’s anime landscape by bringing hits like Dragon Ball and My Hero Academia to passionate new audiences.
HackUTD “provides a venue for self-expression and creativity through technology,” attracting students with varying technical backgrounds from universities all over the country. The students join forces by forming teams around a problem or idea—then they work collaboratively to build a unique solution in a 24-hour burst of creativity.
