Great Places to Work: Fortune Names the 80 ‘Best Workplaces in Texas’ for 2020

More than half of the companies have significant operations in Dallas-Fort Worth.

Fortune, together with workplace culture authority Great Place to Work, has named the 80 ‘Best Workplaces in Texas’ for 2020 in its annual ranking. This year’s list, published in March, includes 50 large companies and 30 small- to medium-sized companies.

Multinational tech firm Cisco, which has multiple locations in North Texas, took the top spot among large companies (1,000 employees or more), while Dallas professional services firm Pariveda Solutions ranked No. 1 among small- to medium-sized companies.

Of the 80 companies that won a spot on the list, nearly 60 percent are based or operate in Dallas-Fort Worth.

Eligible companies included employers that are based in Texas, as well as national and international organizations that have a significant number of employees in the state.

Michael C. Bush, CEO of Great Place to Work, points to Texas as one of the most diverse states in the U.S., while “taking into account factors such as race and ethnicity.”

The organizations on the list “stand out from the crowd because they embrace all of their people,” he said. “These companies provide workplaces where people with a broad range of backgrounds can contribute to the success and innovation of organizations that rank among the best in the nation.”

Many ‘Best Workplaces in Texas’ call Dallas-Fort Worth home

Of the 50 companies in the large category, about 75 percent of the organizations that made the list have a presence in North Texas. Companies headquartered in the region include PrimeLending (No. 25), Encompass Health (No. 36), Ryan (No. 47), and Texas Health Resources (No. 41). Other firms with significant operations in the region include the previously mentioned Cisco (No. 1), as well as Capital One (No. 32), Accenture (No. 40), Ernst & Young (No. 43), and Deloitte (No. 44).

Texas Health Resources, which employs more than 21,000, also took the top spot in Fortune’s recent list of Best Workplaces in Health Care and Biopharma. Dallas-based Encompass Home Health and Hospice ranked No. 7 on the list.

In the small- to medium-sized category, about a third of the 30 companies have a DFW presence. Among those headquartered in the region are Pariveda Solutions, (No. 1), Embark (No. 15), ProPath (No. 24), Freese and Nichols (No. 3), Granite Properties (No. 5), Improving (No. 11), Vari (No 18), 5 (No. 27), Credera Professional Services (No. 29), and QEO Insurance Group (No. 30).

Companies scored on trust, innovation, values, and leadership

The “Best Workplaces in Texas” ranking is based on anonymous survey feedback from nearly 55,000 employees in the state who answered 60 survey questions about how their organization creates a “Great Place to Work For All.” The workplace evaluation is largely based on what employees say about their experiences of trust and reaching their full human potential as part of their organization. Great Place to Work says it analyzes these experiences “relative to each organization’s size, workforce make up, and what’s typical in their industry and in Texas.”

Another 15 percent of the rank is based on employees’ daily experiences of innovation, as well as the company’s values and the effectiveness of their leader, Great Place to Work said.
