The Dallas Women’s Foundation, the largest regional women’s fund in the world, recently announced its 2018 recipients of their Maura Women Helping Women and Young Leader Awards.
For 39 years, the foundation has recognized individuals who inspire advancement for women and girls throughout North Texas.

“Maura Award recipients have dedicated their lives to creating opportunities and pathways for other women to follow; and our Young Leader Award recipients are demonstrating the impact of the next generation of women leaders in their own fields and beyond,” Dallas Women’s Foundation President and CEO Roslyn Dawson Thompson said.
There are four Maura Award recipients:
- Gail Turner, founding member of New Friends New Life (NFNL) which was created to help women and children victims of human trafficking,
- Dr. Cynthia Mickens Ross, creator of the Path~Way to Purpose Residential Housing program that offers living accommodations for women and children.
- Arcilia C. Acosta, president and CEO of CARCON Industries and Construction, and founder and CEO of STL Engineers, has motivated change in the male-dominated construction industry.
- Jocelyn D. Kidd, DDS, was instrumental in creating the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) Academy for the Links, Incorporated Dallas Chapter which aims to educate girls about career paths in these fields.
The Young Leader Award honors women under the age of 40 who have made an major impact in their fields. This year, the foundation has chosen Vanessa Bouché, Ph.D., an investigator on various federal human trafficking projects, and TCU political science professor and recent UTD graduate, Brooke López, who founded the Lone Star Parity Project, an online publication devoted to sharing stories of women in politics.
The awards dinner will be on April 19 at the Dallas Omni Hotel. Nina Tassler, former president and chairwoman of CBS Entertainment, is set to be the keynote speaker.
