Dallas-Fort Worth was No. 1 among all U.S. metros for the number of build-to-rent homes completed in 2022, according to RentCafe’s annual Build-to-Rent Report.
The Dallas metro area saw 2,773 build-to-rent homes last year—a 10-year peak point that marked 441% year-over-year growth. Moreover, DFW’s build-to-rent homes more than doubled in just five years, RentCafe said, surging by 102%, with 3,955 units added between 2017 and 2022 for a total of 7,843 units—the 2nd largest supply in the U.S.
Thousands more are being built now in DFW
According to the report, 4,350 build-to-rent units are currently under construction in metro Dallas, “the second largest number of upcoming homes for rent in all of the U.S.”
And the trend applies across the Lone Star State.
Statewide, the metros that added the highest number of BTR homes in the last 5 years besides Dallas are Houston (1,875 units), Austin, (1,096 units) and San Antonio (1,001 units). All four Texas cities landed among the nation’s Top 10, RentCafe said.
The trend is in across the country as well. Nationwide, eight of top 10 metros for build-to-rent construction hit 10-year highs in 2022, which RentCafe calls the strongest year on record for the B-T-R niche.
Phoenix was ranked No. 1 for the largest number of units completed between 2017 and 2022, followed by Dallas, Detroit, and Houston. Roughly 44,700 homes are now under construction across the country, RentCafe added—triple the number of new homes completed in 2022.
