Pay at the pump is nothing new, but on Tuesday ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) added Apple Pay to that phrase.
Irving-based energy giant ExxonMobil announced that it is the first major fuel retailer to accept mobile payments at the pump across most of its network. That includes Apple Pay, Exxon said.
Using its Speedpass+ mobile payment app, drivers now will be able to use Apple Pay in addition to checking accounts or other major credit and debit cards that are tied to the account. The system works at more than 6,000 Exxon- and Mobil-branded retail locations across the country, Exxon said in a release.
Exxon said that it plans to expand the app’s availability to more than 8,000 locations by the middle of the year.
Customers can use the app to find locations that accept the service.
ExxonMobil is the largest publicly traded international oil and gas company.
Apple Pay was introduced in 2014 by Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) as its brand of mobile payment platform.
