Frisco-based CauseBot will be competing against teams from 22 countries as the only Texas group selected for the global $5 million IBM Watson AI XPRIZE competition.
Selected teams have been challenged to develop and demonstrate how humans can collaborate with artificial intelligence technologies to take on the great challenges facing the world.
CauseBot recently picked up sponsorship from the Frisco Economic Development Corp. to boost its efforts.

“We are excited to have FEDC as our team’s exclusive civic sponsor,” CauseBot team leader Ken Koo said in a release. “The resources provided by our engagement in the Frisco business and nonprofit community will be invaluable as we charge towards our mission of changing the world by providing nonprofits with free artificial intelligence solutions.”
CauseBot is a software company that focuses on the nonprofit sector.
According to IBM, the competition will focus on creating advanced and scalable applications that benefit businesses and consumers in a variety of disciplines.
Those solutions will contribute to enriching available tools and data sets, IBM said, for use by innovators across the globe.
Frisco Mayor Jeff Cheney said the sponsorship fits well within Frisco’s image and goals.
“Frisco is one of the fastest growing cities in America because people see our city as a home for innovation and progress,” Cheney said in the release. “Frisco is proud to sponsor CauseBot in this elite worldwide group of competitors. The IBM Watson AI XPRIZE is a tremendous opportunity for all the entrants; however, we will be enthusiastically rooting for CauseBot to bring home the prize.”
CauseBot has passed the first milestone — earning a spot in the competition for the rest of 2017. Then, in fall 2018 and 2019, subsequent elimination rounds will whittle down the field of competitors.
The AI XPRIZE will end with three finalists participating in the Grand Prize competition on the stage at TED2020.
