Dallas-Fort Worth area high schools scored well in the U.S. News & World Report Best High School Rankings, with Dallas’ School for the Talented and Gifted leading the way, ranked No. 1 in Texas and No. 4 in the nation.
The school’s No. 4 ranking in 2017 ended a five-year streak in which it finished as the top high school in the nation.
Principal Ben Mackey told The Dallas Morning News that he was surprised that the streak ended this year because all of the school’s metrics trended higher.

“We’re grateful to be on the list, regardless of where we are,” Mackey told the newspaper. “When anyone recognizes the hard work that our kids and teachers put in, we’re grateful for that.”
Other DFW schools to score highly were the School of Science and Engineering Magnet in Dallas, which was No. 3 in Texas and ninth in the nation. In all, 589 Texas schools made the 2017 list of 2,609 total schools, according to CultureMap Dallas.
CultureMap said the rankings were based on four factors:
- Students must perform better on proficiency tests than anticipated in their states.
- Disadvantaged students (black, Hispanic, and low-income) also must exceed the state’s average in math and reading proficiency.
- Graduation rates must have met or exceeded national standards.
- A calculation of the College Readiness index, which is based on a school’s Advanced Placement participation rate and how the students scored on those tests.
Other DFW schools in the top 100 of the rankings nationally include Summit International Preparatory in Arlington, No. 10 in Texas and No. 79 in the U.S.; Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, No. 13 in Texas and 92nd nationally; Uplift Education-North Hills Prep High School in Irving, No. 16 in Texas and No. 96 in the nation; and, Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School in Dallas, No. 17 in the state and No. 99 in the U.S.
