The hottest new tofu recipe is nothing like Crispy Baked Sesame Tofu. And not at all like Peanut Tofu Buddha Bowl. In fact, it isn’t food at all—it’s tofu cat litter. And a factory in Dallas will soon be manufacturing it.

Lady N, a “Taiwan-born, design- and engineering-driven” cat litter brand, is expanding in the North America market with tofu cat litter engineered specifically for automatic litter box systems. 

An emerging niche product, tofu cat litter is made from soybean fiber or pulp—a natural byproduct of soy milk manufacturing. While it’s far outsold by traditional clay-based litter, it’s growing in popularity as an eco-friendly, sustainable alternative. It’s said to have superior odor control and cause less paw-tracking around the home than clay-based litter. Its premium price is offset by the fact that it’s biodegradable, flushable, and 99% dust-free.

Designed for automated litter boxes

Lady N, which entered the North American market in 2023, says one key use case for tofu cat litter is automated litter boxes, which use repeated mechanical cycling to sift through litter and separate out the nasty stuff cats leave behind. 

Conventional clay-based cat litter was designed for owners to sift manually—and only occasionally—with a scoop. Those traditional cat litters may “exhibit dust generation, residue carryover, or liner adhesion under automated conditions,” Lady N says.

To address that, Lady N engineered its tofu litter with a focus on “precision particle engineering, optimized flow dynamics, enhanced residue control, and consistent machine cycle performance”—supporting reliable operation across major automatic litter box designs.

“Automatic litter boxes are common in U.S. homes, but truly compatible litters are not,” Lady N Brand Manager Naimei Hsu said in a statement. “Lady N was created to fill this overlooked gap through engineering-driven and sustainable solutions.”

Selecting Dallas for new facility

Lady N announced Monday that it has selected Dallas as the site for its future manufacturing facility. The company says it’s actively recruiting key leadership roles, including a plant manager and HR manager, to support local job creation.

The company has a warehouse in Northern California that’s already in operation, and is planning an East Coast facility “to improve nationwide distribution efficiency.”

Lady N Lady N will be exhibiting at Global Pet Expo 2026 in Orlando, Florida, where it will present its machine-compatible tofu cat litter solutions and meet with retailers, distributors, and OEM partners, the company said.
