The Last Word: DFW’s ‘Fastest-Growing Company’ CEO on Being David in a Goliath Industry

“We compete against multi-gazillion-dollar companies. But that’s okay. I like the mentality of David versus Goliath.”

…on competing in the power distribution industry, in a recent MEDC podcast interview with Madison Clark of McKinney Economic Development Corporation.

What happens when you take on industry giants with “a little bit of attitude”? For Maverick Power, it’s led to unprecedented success. The McKinney-based company’s nearly 5,800% growth over the past three years is the highest growth rate the Dallas Business Journal has seen in its 12-year history of the Fast 50 awards—and marks the first time a manufacturing company has achieved the honor, according to founder and CEO Tom Currier.

That jaw-dropping growth also earned Maverick Power another major recognition last week when it topped the latest SMU Dallas 100 rankings.

In an industry that’s seen little innovation over the past two decades, Currier says, Maverick Power is taking on the giants. The power distribution company designs and manufactures equipment for high-demand sectors, including data centers, healthcare, and oil and gas. Maverick supports everything from streaming services to AI-driven technologies.

“We’re not just building products; we’re powering the internet,” said Currier.

The company’s name itself reflects its scrappy mindset. “Maverick is rebellious, pushes against the status quo, and wants to disrupt the industry,” Currier said in a recent podcast with the MEDC’s Madison Clark.

From napkin sketch to industry disruptor

The company’s origin story is as audacious as its name. “Rather than buy an existing company, we decided to start one,” Currier told Clark. The founding team, including Currier and three key partners, sketched out their business plan on a napkin in just 20 minutes in 2020.

“We thought [the time] was ripe for disruption to have this kind of David-versus-Goliath mentality and come in there and take on some of the big players,” he said. But, it turns out they were launching during one of the most uncertain times in recent history—March 2020.

He continued: “That notion of entrepreneurs having perseverance and grit really is true.”

“It was the worst time to start a business,” Currier admitted. Not to mention the capital-intensive nature of manufacturing: “Sixty cents of every dollar is spent on raw materials in our business.” At one point, he told his team, “Guys, we got 90 days. We’re running real low on cash.”

Even so, thanks in part to strategic bootstrapping and partnerships with financial institutions that provided crucial lines of credit—and a transformative purchase order that set the company on a rapid growth trajectory in 2021—Maverick’s story turned from survival to record-breaking growth.

Currier still likes the mentality of David versus Goliath.

“So far, it’s worked,” he told Clark. “And it’s one of the things we actually screen for when we’re interviewing folks…Do they want to be part of something bigger than themselves, be part of a team?”

Tapping talent pools

The company, which relocated to McKinney in May 2024, strategically chose the city to tap into talent pools from northern counties and both east and west. With a 115,000-square-foot production facility already in Garland and deep roots in McKinney—where Currier has lived for over 20 years—the company is positioning itself for continued growth.

Maverick now employs nearly 500 people across four locations, with plans to hit $500 million in revenue within two years and reach the $1 billion mark within five. Its facilities are already operating at near-full capacity, with bookings extending into 2027, according to Currier.

As Maverick Power continues to grow, the company is on the lookout for talent. “We’re hiring wiring technicians, mechanical and electrical engineers, and more,” Currier said on the podcast. “If you’re looking for a career where you can be part of something bigger and help disrupt an industry, we’d love to hear from you.”

As Currier put it: “This may be the first time folks have heard of Maverick Power, but we’re pretty confident it won’t be the last.”
