The Last Word: Prosper Police Department on Its $689K Mine-Resistant Armored Vehicle

“It’s designed for high water rescues (which saved many people this past week during the floods), active shooter situations, hostage rescues, and other critical incidents, ensuring the safety of our officers and community.”

The Prosper Police Department recently posted a photo of its $689,000 mine-resistant armored vehicle parked outside town hall for the city’s annual Chrome and Coffee car show. That caused some buzz in the comments, the Dallas Observer reported, with some wondering why a small (but growing) city would need such a massive, militarized vehicle. The department responded with our Last Word today and noted that the high-tech vehicle was obtained at no cost to Prosper through the Federal 1033 program.

“The Prosper Police Department is committed to keeping our Town safe and this vehicle is a vital part of that mission,” the department added, noting that its use of the vehicle “continues with an annual renewal agreement.”

The Observer noted that 107 police and sheriff departments across Texas—including other local cities—have obtained mine-resistant vehicles, citing the federal Defense Logistics Agency.
