Greenville-based EXOS Aerospace is one of three companies that are currently licensed by the FAA to fly resusable rockets, the CEO told KXAS. The other two? They’re just a little bigger: Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin.
“Texas is one of the most business-friendly environments in the country and we’re glad to be here, because North Texas needs something besides SpaceX and Blue Origin,” Quinn told KXAS. “Little companies out here too.”
On Wednesday at the Caddo Mills Municipal Airport, EXOS performed a reduced-throttle run test to prepare for a reusable rocket launch in 2024.
“For 50 to 100 years, our space race has been throwing rockets away in space, making some space junk up there, and we believe there’s a better way to do it,” Quinn, whose company was founded in 2014, told KXAS.
EXOS is a flight service provider for the NASA REDDI program, KXAS noted, qualifying its rockets to be used by universities to send payloads into space with NASA funding. And in fact, a team from Purdue University was on hand for the rocket test Wednesday, performing a lunar lander thermal experiment as part of the test.
