American Airlines is set to open one of the final pieces of its 300-acre headquarters campus in Fort Worth.
The Fort Worth-based carrier announced that it’s on track to open a new hospitality complex at the beginning of next year, where visiting employees can relax after a day of training and meetings.
“The new hospitality complex is the culmination of the multi-year project to create one campus for one team,” American wrote in a memo to employees. “The vision focuses on sparking collaboration and helping team members live out our shared purpose: To care for people on life’s journey.”
Welcome to Skyview 6
Skyview 6—taking its title from other similarly named buildings on the campus—is a nine-story facility that will feature 600 guest rooms for the company’s employees and those of its wholly owned carriers. The $250 million project will also feature a 10,000-square-foot ballroom to host events like the quarterly “State of the Airline.”
American’s employee base has been growing this year, as business and leisure travel has picked up after the height of the pandemic. According to the Dallas Business Journal, the company added nearly 4,400 employees this year, bringing its total to more than 103,000. When combined with its wholly owned carriers, the company has a workforce of more than 130,000. About 12,000 of those employees work out of its headquarters campus daily, the DBJ notes.
More than just hotel rooms and meeting spaces
While visiting Skyview 6, employees will find more than just hotel rooms and meeting spaces decorated with “engaging art installations by team members.” Plans for the facility will find a dining room and tavern with games, bites, and drinks, along with outdoor courts for things like basketball, tennis, pickleball, and volleyball. The company is also planning a 73,000-square-foot-plus fitness center with an exercise pool.
“Each year, thousands of team members from across the operation come to campus to learn—spanning from new hire and recurrent training to team members in new roles,” American wrote. “We’re hoping to simplify team members’ visiting experience by building a modern hospitality complex at the heart of our campus. A place where visiting team members can lodge, eat, socialize, and work out.”
‘A space for learning and development’
Skyview 6 is expected to open in the first quarter of 2023. Under construction since 2019, the facility was initially slated to open in 2021 before pandemic-related delays pushed the open date. It will replace a previous flight attendant hotel on the same site, per The Dallas Morning News.
Once finished, Skyview 6 will add to American’s $1 billion headquarters campus. In the works since 2015, the Robert L. Crandall Campus opened in 2019, housing American’s integrated operations and administrative offices. (In 2020, Dallas Innovates wrote about a $350 million expansion of the campus.)
Skyview 6 is being developed by Crescent Real Estate Development, which also developed other buildings on the campus. The design architect is Pelli Clarke & Partners, with HKS as the executive architect. The Beck Group is the general contractor.
“It’s a space for learning and development, for us to care for each other, and for us to grow stronger as a team,” American wrote.
