UT Southwestern Medical Center has long led studies delving into depression, but Dr. Madhukar Trivedi said research alone won’t lend the greatest difference. The public has to get behind the topic.

“We have better tools to study the brain, we also have better understanding on where we should be focusing that attention on, and I think that if we as a whole community really take this on, then we will get to a point where we don’t have to see the losses,” Trivedi told D Healthcare Daily

Depression is a mental disorder an estimated 350 million people suffer from in the world, according to the World Health Organization.

“I think that if we as a whole community really take this on, then we will get to a point where we don’t have to see the losses.”

Trivedi leads the Center for Depression Research and Clinical Care at UTSW, which was established last year with a $5 million gift from the Hersh Foundation. The center enables UTSW to build upon its current depression research and think long term with studies such as identifying children who are at risk for depression.

“We’re following them for a long time to be able to pursue the paths of developing lab tests, so we can have a test we can use so we can diagnose and determine treatments for patients,” Trivedi told D Healthcare Daily
