The timing is perfect for Dallas-based StackPath, a thriving edge-computing platform provider, to bring in new chief technology officer William Charnock, said CEO Kip Turco.
The new hire will help StackPath continue to expand its global footprint in the edge computing market, according to a statement. With the company landing Series B funding from Juniper Networks and Cox Communications in March to accelerate product development and go-to-market activities, the timing is perfect to have a new CTO who is expected to help StackPath continue to build its foundation and move even closer to the edge of edge computing.
To date, StackPath has raised $396 million, including an earlier Series A round led by Abry Partners.
“We are thrilled to welcome Will to our executive leadership team as we continue investing heavily in providing a full-complement of edge computing and edge applications,” Turco said in a statement. “Will is well known for his technical engineering and operations leadership. His success building high-scale infrastructures and networks will be paramount as we further stake our leadership position at the edge. We are moving very quickly to the edge and the timing could not be any better for Will to join us.”
Charnock brings more than 20 years of experience in high tech to the team, most recently as senior director of network strategy for Fastly, an edge cloud provider in San Francisco, and as co-founder and former CEO of PacketFabric, a Houston firm that gives businesses a Network-as-a-Service platform connecting multiple cloud-based and private systems.
“I’m excited to join StackPath and the team that is defining and building the next generation of edge computing technology,” Charnock said in a statement. “A lot of operators are talking about edge computing, but StackPath is leading the way and I have been empowered to enforce the technical changes necessary to take us to the next level.”
Since its inception in 2016, StackPath has moved quickly to become one of the leading companies providing edge-computing platforms. Cloud edge computing allows data produced by IoT devices to be processed nearer to where the data is created, speeding up analysis to near real-time.
In August, StackPath was named the No. 1 tech startup in Dallas and one of the top five for Texas by “The Tech Tribune.” The ratings are based on revenue potential, leadership team, brand traction, and competitive landscape. StackPath has made the list for four consecutive years, due to company growth and market outlook.
StackPath and its investors are banking on the rapid growth of edge computing, partly attributable to new and growing 5G digital cellular networks that can boost—by a factor of 10—wireless network speed and increase data volume capacity by an estimated 40 percent per user over current 4G standards.
