The Last Word: Dreamers of Day CTO On Small Website Misses That Lead to Big Problems

Your pretty website won't save you when technical missteps torpedo your revenue.

“The web is fragile.”

.… on why tiny website problems can crush traffic and cause major headaches—and how to avoid them, via LinkedIn.

“Small misses can lead to big problems,” Mark Atli writes. He’s seen the carnage firsthand.

The co-founder and tech director at Dallas digital product agency Dreamers of Day recently took to LinkedIn to share a highlight reel of site snafus that make a CMO or CEO break out in a cold sweat.

A staging site’s NOINDEX tag left on after launch? That crushed SEO and traffic for over a month. Cookie banners that say they reject cookies but actually don’t? Hello, GDPR violations. Wrong canonical tags confusing Google. Broken redirect rules creating infinite loops. Accessibility scores tanking after marketing teams made seemingly innocent CMS edits—with no alerts to warn anyone.

A pretty website isn’t enough. Technical missteps can torpedo revenue, trigger legal issues, and tank your brand’s visibility faster than you can say “404 error.”

Atli’s advice, especially if your organization manages its site in-house, or if your agency only handles maintenance and reactive tasks: Build layered checks. Automate what you can. Create regular cadence-based reviews. And build a recurring QA checklist in a spreadsheet.

Just remember: “Assign it. Run it. Stick to it.”
