Leafy greens is a multibillion-dollar industry. But before lettuce can get into salads across the U.S., it has to navigate coast-to-coast supply chain and distribution issues, says Eden Green Technology CEO Eddy Badrina, whose Cleburne-based ag-tech startup opened a new, two-acre vertical greenhouse in September as part of a planned $47 million vertical farm. Those issues have led to what Badrina calls "the 3,000-mile salad."

Eden Green Technology's newest vertical greenhouses in Cleburne will be able to grow 1.8 million pounds of produce annually in just 62,500 square feet of growing space, the company says. The facilities use Eden Green's proprietary microclimate environments, lighting solutions, and hydroponic vine systems.
A second phase of the ag-tech startup's planned $47 million expansion is now under construction. That's expected to triple total production to more than 5 million pounds of produce annually.

Valued at $2.3 billion and backed by Alphabet's VC investment arm GV, it will create 100 jobs at its new indoor farm in Arlington—where software, sensors, and machine learning will help things grow.
