Federal Health Agency Plugs Into Texas With Ambitious Clinical Trials Push

The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health—or ARPA-H— wants to enable 90% of eligible Americans to participate in clinical trials within 30 minutes of their homes. The agency officially launched its new Texas "customer experience" headquarters at Dallas' Pegasus Park on Thursday, which will be home base for the initiative.

Public-Private Consortium Will Fund 3 Gene Therapy Clinical Trials at UT Southwestern

"There are over 10,000 rare diseases that affect millions of people worldwide, and most of them are genetic," notes UT Southwestern's Steven Gray (above, with Susan Iannaccone, M.D.). Testing on a total of eight genetic diseases has been approved for funding by the Bespoke Gene Therapy Consortium and other organizations.

The grants were awarded from the organization's Field of Interest Funds, endowed funds which are customized to align with a donor’s interest in a specific cause, the foundation said. Historically, each year the funds cover a range of issues, including the arts, critical needs, children & families, and animal welfare.

UTSW Researchers Discover Liver Hormone Helps Drunk Mice Sober Up Quicker

Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas have discovered that could lead to an effective treatment for acute alcohol intoxications.
The researchers reported in a new study that a shot of a liver-produced hormone called FGF21 sobered up mice that had passed out from alcohol. It allowed them to regain consciousness and coordination much faster than those that didn’t receive the treatment, UT Southwestern said....
