UT Southwestern researchers have used gene editing technology to develop what could be a breakthrough for dilated cardiomyopathy, a heart condition that affects one in 250 people worldwide. “The pace of this field is really breathtaking,” said Eric Olson, Ph.D., who co-led the study. “I expect that if this moves forward into patients, we’re not talking within decades—we’re talking within years.”​

The Cary Council Awards $50K Grants to Three ‘DocStar’ Researchers at UTSW

The Cary Council—a group of young leaders dedicated to advancing early-stage research in support of Southwestern Medical Foundation and UT Southwestern Medical Center—has announced three new "DocStars": Dominic Moon, M.D.; Robin Higashi, Ph.D.; and Proshad Efune, M.D. The UT Southwestern principal investigators will get $50,000 each to continue their pioneering work. Since launching the program in 2017, The Cary Council has awarded 15 grants, which attracted $9.4 million in additional funding.

The Last Word: Carnegie Medal Recipient Lyda Hill on Why More Women Are Needed in Science and Medicine

In a ceremony Thursday night in New York City, Hill received a 2022 Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy along with fellow recipients Dolly Parton, Manu Chandaria, and Lynn and Stacy Schusterman. Dallas Innovates wrote about Hill's honor back in August. She was recognized by the Carnegie Medal for supporting women in STEM fields and inspiring girls to be interested in STEM careers, in addition to being recognized for investments in the life sciences, including cancer and mental health research and treatment; conservation; and empowering community-based nonprofits to maximize impact, the organization said.

Mark Cuban-Backed Opioid Recovery Startup Sonara Health Raises $3M for Medication Monitoring Platform

Founded in 2020, Dallas-based Sonara Health has a big mission: "We want to end the opioid epidemic and save lives." To help tackle it, Sonara secured a patent last month for a take-home methadone monitoring system. With the new funding and earlier support from backers including Mark Cuban, the startup has raised $5M to date. "In a world where we send billionaires to space in reusable rockets, I thought we ought to be able to create a solution that helps patients with opioid use disorder to get their daily medication in a way that does not disrupt their daily lives," said CEO Michael Giles, M.D.

The University’s newest school in more than 50 years will be named after Peter O’Donnell Jr., the late local investor and visionary philanthropist. The School of Public Health will be "research-intensive,' says Interim Dean Celette Sugg Skinner.

The school plans to welcome its first class of Master of Public Health students in the fall of 2023, followed by classes for Ph.D. students in the fall of 2024.
