Texas Instruments Starts Production at New Semiconductor ‘Fab’ in North Texas

Called SM1, TI's new semiconductor "fab" in Sherman represents up to $40 billion in investments. It's slated to ultimately produce "tens of millions of chips daily that go into nearly every electronic device"—from smartphones, automotive systems, and life-saving medical devices to industrial robots, smart home appliances, and data centers.

As it announced a new $100 billion commitment to manufacturing in America Monday—for a planned total of $600 billion over the next four years—Apple said a lot of that money will be spent in Sherman, 60 miles north of Dallas. Its partners there include Texas Instruments, GlobalWafers America, and Coherent, which makes the lasers that enable FaceID on iPhones and iPads.

Dallas-based TI said it's working with the Trump administration to expand its U.S. foundational semiconductor manufacturing capacity at its "fab" plants in Richardson and Sherman in North Texas, as well as in Lehi, Utah. Combined, TI’s new manufacturing mega-sites will support more than 60,000 U.S. jobs, the company said.

PWT said its new Sherman headquarters will enable it to respond even more rapidly to customer demand while ramping up its production "in a safe and sustainable way." GlobalWafers Awarded Up to $400M in CHIPS Funding for Silicon Wafer Plants in North Texas and Missouri

Under new federal funding announced Wednesday by the Commerce Department, Taiwan-based GlobalWafers will build and expand facilities in Sherman and St. Peters, Missouri. In Sherman, the investment would establish "the first 300mm silicon wafer manufacturing facility for advanced chips" in the U.S.—along with the production of 150mm and 200mm silicon cabide epitaxy wafers.

But momentum kicked up a notch when two big semiconductor wafer fabrication plant projects were slated for Sherman: a $30 billion plan by Texas Instruments to build four "fab" plants, and GlobiTech's planned $5 billion silicon wafer facility. Together, the projects are expected to bring 4,500 jobs to the area.

Texas Instruments broke ground on the new 300-millimeter semiconductor wafer fabrication plants in May 2022, noting that the project could ultimately support as many as 3,000 direct jobs. The new "fabs" will manufacture tens of millions of analog and embedded processing chips daily that will go into electronics everywhere.
