The foundation's annual Rainwater Prizes honor researchers worldwide who are advancing discoveries for diseases caused by tau protein accumulations in the brain. This year's winners include a professor at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden and an Early-Career Scientist honoree at Brown University.

The grants came out of a workshop for researchers with a focus on Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) and Frontotemporal Dementias (FTDs), part of a class of debilitating neurodegenerative diseases that may shorten a person's lifespan, and for which no current treatments exist.

The foundation—launched in the early 1990s by Fort Worth billionaire and philanthropist Richard E. Rainwater—said that this year's $400K Outstanding Innovation Prize will be awarded to a team from the University of California San Diego and Washington University.
Dr. Susanne Wegmann of the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) will be awarded the $200K Rainwater Prize for Innovative Early-Career Scientist.

Rainwater Charitable Foundation Enters Partnership to Establish Network of Brain Banks

The late Fort Worth billionaire’s foundation is making new strides in neurodegenerative brain disease research with its announcement of a partnership with CurePSP. Together they aim to facilitate researcher access to brain tissue and data and help advance the world towards treatments of these currently deadly diseases.
