Marshall became the NBA's first Black female CEO when then-Mavs-majority owner Mark Cuban hired her in 2018. During her tenure, she helped the organization emerge from sexual misconduct and harassment controversies with the hiring of other female team executives and a focus on diversity and inclusion—along with female-focused programs like Girls Empowered by Mavericks (GEM).
