The funding from the U.S. Commerce Department will support the construction of two semiconductor wafer fabrication plants in Sherman, 40 miles north of Dallas—part of TI's $30 billion, four "fab" project in the city. It will also support the buildout of another TI fab plant in Lehi, Utah.
Under new federal funding announced Wednesday by the Commerce Department, Taiwan-based GlobalWafers will build and expand facilities in Sherman and St. Peters, Missouri. In Sherman, the investment would establish "the first 300mm silicon wafer manufacturing facility for advanced chips" in the U.S.—along with the production of 150mm and 200mm silicon cabide epitaxy wafers.
News of the USPTO fast-tracking is surely music to the ears of many North Texas innovators. Just last month, the region was awarded the Texoma Semiconductor 'Fablet' Tech Hub. Meanwhile, TI is building a $30 billion semiconductor campus in Sherman, and GlobiTech is building a $5 billion "fab plant" in the same North Texas city.
