3 Years Ahead of Schedule, SMU Raises More than $1.64B in Its ‘SMU Ignited’ Fundraising Campaign

SMU said that with more than 67,500 donors, volunteers, and supporters, the campaign surpassed its $1.5 billion goal three years ahead of schedule. The university joins several elite universities that have concluded fundraising campaigns totaling $1.5 billion or more—including fellow ACC members Stanford, Duke, and Miami.

President R. Gerald Turner will transition to president emeritus whenever the next president of SMU takes office, likely on June 1, 2025. SMU said that Turner’s leadership has driven the academic and reputational transformation of the university.

Elevating SMU’s standing as a premier global research institution, the gift will create 10 endowed academic positions in engineering and data science and support research in those fields as well. SMU President R. Gerald Turner said the gift will be evenly split between SMU's newly named O’Donnell Data Science and Research Computing Institute and an initiative for digital innovation in engineering and computer science in the Lyle School of Engineering.
