Before Colossal Biosciences can "de-extinct" the woolly mammoth, some small steps are in order. They've now been taken by the Colossal Woolly Mouse—a gene-edited creation with "dramatically altered coat color, texture, and thickness reminiscent of the woolly mammoth’s core phenotypes."
The funding will support groundbreaking research into artificial womb technologies with the goal of protecting endangered species and advancing wildlife conservation efforts, the foundation said.
Dallas-based Colossal said that in her new role, MacArthur Award winner Beth Shapiro will oversee continued expansion of the company's de-extinction and conservation science teams. The company previously announced plans to "de-extinct" the woolly mammoth, the Tasmanian tiger, and the dodo bird.
Colossal Biosciences and production partner Teton Ridge Entertainment have signed with James Reed, director of the Oscar-winning Netflix documentary "My Octopus Teacher," and his company Underdog Films, to produce the docuseries.

Colossal is already working to "de-extinct" the woolly mammoth via a mammoth-elephant hybrid project. Now the Tasmanian tiger—which went extinct nearly 100 years ago due to human hunting—is the second species Colossal is seeking to bring back.
"We’re thrilled to be collaborating with Andrew Pask and the University of Melbourne to restore this amazing animal to Earth," said Ben Lamm, Colossal's co-founder and CEO.
What companies are finding funding or having a big exit? From startup investments to grants and acquisitions, Dallas Innovates tracks what’s happening in North Texas money.
Colossal launched last September with a plan to "de-extinct" the woolly mammoth by using CRISPR genetic engineering to create a mammoth-elephant hybrid.
With a total raise of $75 million to date, the startup aims to
have its first set of mammoth-elephant hybrid calves "in 4 to 6 years," co-founder and CEO Ben Lamm told us. But Colossal's goals extend much further—with the potential "to advance human health, enhance food production, reduce environmental impact, and optimize animal health and welfare."
It's not "Jurassic Park," but it's almost as amazing. Hypergiant founder Ben Lamm is launching a new biosciences and genetics startup—Colossal—with $15 million in private funding. The goal: Use genomics to "de-extinct" the woolly mammoth and re-wild it on the Arctic tundra. Lamm's co-founder, Harvard geneticist Dr. George Church, says this "grand vision" could lead to big opportunities in conservation, biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and more.
