In yet another sign that downtown Dallas is increasingly becoming a residential neighborhood, the Switzerland-based Empira Group plans to break ground later this year on a signature residential address—with the Dallas Arts District and the central business district beckoning in two directions.

In 2004, then-Dallas Mayor Laura Miller called 211 North Ervay an "eyesore," and a city plan called for it to be demolished to make way for a park. But others prized the colorfully quirky 1958 tower for its historic and architectural value. Well, the prizers and preservationists won because it's still standing there. And now—after being acquired by Plano-based Wolfe Investments—it's slated to get a whole new life as a multifamily residential building.

Downtown Dallas’ 60-Story Comerica Bank Tower Could Get Apartments, Hotel, Retail
The tower is the second-tallest in Dallas and was designed by noted architect Philip Johnson and his partner John Burgee. Jonas Woods' Pacific Elm Properties recently took majority ownership of the building, and plans to convert 20 floors into apartments and a luxury hotel, according to the Dallas Morning News. “We believe a mixed-use tower is much more likely to be successful today than a more than one million-square-foot office tower,” Woods told the DMN.
