Robotaxi Rollout: Avride, Hyundai To Partner on Self-Driving Uber Rides in Dallas

As soon as later this year, Uber customers in Dallas may have the opportunity to order a ride with a Hyundai IONIQ 5 robotaxi operating self-driving tech from Austin-based Avride.

With Cruise robotaxis already being tested in Dallas, more autonomous innovation is on the way to the city in 2024 and 2025 via a partnership between Uber and Austin-based Avride. Uber and Uber Eats customers may have the option to select a robotaxi for their next ride across town or a sidewalk robot to roll their favorite restaurant order home.

The robots will serve you now. Restaurants across North Texas have been testing table-side food delivery robots, from La Duni in Dallas to Fort Worth's Japan House to Chili's locations across DFW. Now San Francisco-based RobotLAB—whose central U.S. office is in the DFW suburb of Southlake—has launched what it calls a "first-of-its-kind" robotics franchising program. It goes beyond restaurant robots to include robotics solutions for delivery, cleaning, education, and customer service.

A fleet of 16 autonomous robots from San Francisco-based Starship is now rolling across the SMU campus, delivering food from nine campus eateries. The app-controlled, on-demand robots have Mustang branding and can deliver up to 20 pounds of food in "minutes." Starship, co-founded by a former Skype founding engineer, has made over 2.5 million autonomous deliveries worldwide.
