Dallas-based Susan G. Komen has announced two major North Texas events in October, one in Plano and the other in Fort Worth, bringing together survivors, supporters, and advocates to raise money to advance its mission and provide support for those facing breast cancer now.
Komen, the world’s leading breast cancer organization, will host the “Dallas North Texas Race for the Cure” in Plano, as well as a “More Than Pink” Walk in Fort Worth. The Plano Race is 5 kilometers, along with a 1-mile route, and will take place on Saturday, Oct. 19. The Fort Worth Walk, which is a 3-mile walk with a 1-mile option, will be on Saturday, Oct. 5.
Susan G. Komen said it has partnered with Dallas-based independent petroleum refiner HF Sinclair to increase awareness and participation in its battle against breast cancer. Valerie Pompa, EVP of operations at HF Sinclair, and Rebecca Eads, the company’s Total Rewards director, will serve as chairpersons for this year’s race.
“As an organization, we’re committed to helping improve the lives of people in the communities where we live and work,” Pompa said in a statement. “The fight against breast cancer needs all of us. That’s why this year we are pleased to partner with Susan G. Komen to sponsor this year’s Race for the Cure. Join us in this worthy cause.”
How Susan G. Komen helps
The nonprofit said that every 12 minutes, a woman in the U.S. dies from breast cancer. This year alone, an estimated 23,290 women in Texas will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 3,280 will lose their lives to the disease.
According to Susan G. Komen, experts say one-third of breast cancer deaths in the U.S. could be prevented with universal access to modern treatments. Funds raised at Komen events will allow the organization to meet the immediate needs of breast cancer patients through its free Breast Care Helpline and offer services such as patient navigation, financial assistance, and emotional support, the organization said. The funds also will support research breakthroughs that allow more lives to be saved from breast cancer and bring us closer to the cures for all breast cancers.
In 2024, the Komen Financial Assistance program provided financial assistance totaling $1,257,750 to 2,267 people in Texas who are in breast cancer treatment or living with metastatic breast cancer, the organization said. Komen’s Patient Care Center provided 7,796 services to 6,259 people living in Texas, working to address 8,453 barriers to care that may otherwise prevent someone from getting the breast health care or support they need.
“At HF Sinclair, our values are the foundation of everything we do,” Eads said. “We’re united through our core values of safety, integrity, teamwork, ownership and inclusion, which also align with the mission of Susan G. Komen. We want to make sure access to high-quality care is available to those who need it.”
Fort Worth Walk Chair Lisa Moore, senior lending assistant/banking officer at Prosperity Bank, is a 32-year four-time breast cancer survivor. She’s passionate about making this year’s Fort Worth “More Than Pink” Walk a special experience for survivors.
“Giving up will never be an option. You must be the biggest advocate for your health. Your Health is your Wealth. You have cancer but cancer doesn’t have you,” Moore said.
