Medical City Heart Hospital in Dallas, Texas, has announced a $60 million expansion project aimed at increasing its capacity to provide specialized cardiovascular services. The expansion comes in response to a growing demand for high-level heart care in North Texas.
The project will add three floors to the existing facility, increasing the hospital’s space by more than 60,000 square feet. This additional area will accommodate over 60 new patient beds for intensive and advanced care programs.
Notably, the centerpiece of the expansion is a new 28-bed cardiovascular intensive care unit. This expanded ICU will feature beds specially equipped for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The ECMO life support therapy is an advanced intervention that supports patients with severe cardiac or respiratory failure by oxygenating blood outside the body, allowing the heart and lungs to rest and heal.
Looking to the future, the expansion also includes shell space earmarked for additional progressive care beds. These advanced patient care beds are typically designed to adapt to the changing needs of patients as they progress through different stages of recovery. While not a new concept in healthcare, the integration of advanced technology into hospital beds has accelerated in recent years, aiming to improve outcomes and enhance the quality of care.
In a statement, Jay deVenny, CEO of Medical City Dallas, said the expansion will enable the hospital to “treat more patients with the most complex heart conditions.”
Betting on the growth of healthcare demand in North Texas
Construction is projected to be completed by summer 2025. The expansion is part of a larger initiative by Medical City Healthcare, which involves more than $1.5 billion in capital improvements across its healthcare system over a five-year period, according to the hospital.
Medical City Heart Hospital, which opened in 2019, is a full-service acute care hospital with 63 beds. It specializes in cardiac services, offering treatments such as complex vascular and heart surgery, advanced heart failure care, and minimally invasive valvular surgery, according to the hospital.
Becker’s Hospital Review has recognized it among the top cardiology programs in the U.S., a distinction that can help attract both patients and skilled medical professionals.
