‘Gaming’s Biggest Night’: Plano‑Based Cinemark Will Screen The Game Awards Live December 9

The 8th annual Game Awards—called "the Oscars for the gaming world" by the New York Times, with over 83 million livestreams in 2020—will be shown live at select Cinemark theaters across the U.S. along with an advance screening of "The King's Man," an origin story for Matthew Vaughn's "Kingsmen" film series.

Movie fans have the Oscars. TV lovers have the Emmys. So where do gamers go for their big awards night of the year? On December 9, they can go to select theaters across the U.S. owned by Plano-based Cinemark to see the 8th Annual Game Awards live on the big screen.

Last week Geoff Keighley—the creator, executive producer, and host of the Game Awards, announced this year’s nominees across 30 categories. Livestreaming on YouTube from the Microsoft Theater in L.A., where the event will be held, Keighley said multiple nominations had been scored by first-person shooter “Deathloop”; the action-adventure relationships platform “It Takes Two”; “Psychonauts 2”; and “Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart.”

All those grabbed nominations for the big prize as well—Game of the Year—along with “Resident Evil Village” and “Metroid Dread.”

‘The Oscars for the gaming world’

The New York Times calls The Game Awards “the Oscars for the gaming world,” and last year’s numbers bear that out—its 2020 event delivered over 83 million livestreams, according to Cinemark.

The Game Awards is one of the largest live-streamed events of the year on the Internet, where game creators, esports champions, digital influencers, and Hollywood stars mingle to see who’ll win big. This year’s awards show will feature “exclusive game world premieres, new game announcements, and musical performances,” Cinemark says.

Cinemark and 20th Century Studios create a Dec. 9 ‘Superticket’

To kick the night up a notch, Cinemark is partnering with 20th Century Studios to offer an exclusive “Superticket” for the event, pairing an advance screening of Matthew Vaughn’s “The King’s Man” with the gaming awards show. The action flick stars Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton, and Djimon Housou in an origin story for the “Kingsmen” film series.

“The King’s Man” is scheduled to be released on December 22, after several pandemic-related delays from its original November 2019 release date.

“As the first exhibitor to show The Game Awards, we’re excited to once again exclusively offer an epic night out by pairing the broadcast of this year’s awards ceremony with an advance screening of ‘The King’s Man,’” said Justin McDaniel, Cinemark’s SVP of global content, in a statement.

“Cinemark is all about providing the ultimate in-theatre entertainment experience,” McDaniel added, “and there’s no better way to watch exclusive game premieres, announcements and anticipated awards than on a larger-than-life screen with immersive surround sound that will make both gamers and movie-lovers feel like they’re part of the action.”

Other Game Awards categories

Like the Oscars, The Game Awards has a long list of categories and nominees. Categories include Best Game Direction, Best Ongoing, Best Indie, Best Narrative, Best Performance, Games for Impact, Best Mobile, Best VR/AR, Best Fighting, and Best Esports Team, Event, and Coach—along with many more.

HyperX product giveaways

At the December 9 live event, Cinemark will also feature in-theatre giveaways of HyperX products. Each guest will receive a unique discount code to use on HyperX.com with their ticket to the event as well.
