In the landscape of African logistics, a new player is revving up to bridge a two-decade technology gap. Oklahoma-based Apexloads, founded by Charles Thuo, is steering the continent’s freight industry into the fast lane of digital innovation.
Thuo, an aerospace engineer turned entrepreneur, identified a weak point in Africa’s logistics sector, a crucial component of the continent’s economic engine. “The technology gap was staggering, with Africa lagging at least 20 years behind,” he says, comparing the logistics tech in North America to that in Africa. This realization became the catalyst for Apexloads, a logistics technology company that aims to streamline the continent’s transportation sector.
At its core, Apexloads is a digital matchmaker, connecting cargo owners with transporters. “Think of the hustle of finding a taxi before ride-hailing apps,” Thuo explains. “We’re bringing the same convenience to the logistics industry.”
The company’s flagship product, the Transportation Relationship Manager (TRM), is a unified logistics platform that combines load board functionality with transportation management and real-time shipment visibility. According to the company’s website, it’s designed to tackle “the triple challenge” facing African logistics: limited visibility, lack of standards, and cash flow disruptions.
Thuo aims to “significantly” advance Africa’s logistics technology landscape by integrating and leveraging proven North American solutions to address the unique challenges and opportunities within Africa.
The founder’s journey from Boeing to the driver’s seat of a truck, and eventually to the helm of a tech startup, is as unconventional as it is inspiring. “The switch from working at Boeing to becoming a truck driver isn’t a typical career move,” he admits. “Convincing my family back in Africa that this was a good idea was more challenging than the job itself.”
But that hands-on experience in the trenches of logistics proved invaluable. It allowed Thuo to identify the pain points in the industry and craft solutions that resonate with both shippers and transporters.
Apexloads’ selection for the Capital One mobility-focused Accelerator has been a game-changer. “Being selected for such a renowned program was a significant validation,” Thuo says. The program has provided more than just validation; it offered crucial insights into go-to-market strategies, branding, and software development.
The founder has clear plans for future investments in Apexloads. “We will invest the money in expanding our user base to achieve critical mass,” he says. “Our solution relies heavily on network effects, and also growing our user base is essential.”
Thuo’s journey from the skies of aerospace engineering to the roads of trucking has come full circle. With technology as his vehicle, he’s paving the way for a more connected, efficient, and prosperous Africa.
“Logistics is the backbone of any economy,” he emphasizes, “and African countries cannot develop without a robust and efficient logistics industry.”
