Dallas’ Rogers-O’Brien Launches ‘Reality Capture Service’ With 3D Laser Scanning, Drone-Based Mapping

"Anyone can scan a space," said Chris Patton, director of virtual design and construction at RO. "We know what needs to happen after the scan."

Before a building is built, the latest technology can create precise design plans out of thin air—by scoping out detailed measurements on a worksite. And after a building’s built, the same innovative tools can prove up the outcome against the original design, documenting everything for future needs.

Today, Dallas-based Rogers-O’Brien Construction (RO) announced the launch of its own new high-tech offering: MirrorScape, a “reality capture service” that aims to transform how project teams plan, design, and build.

RO’s Trevor Owen

When used as a standalone offering, MirrorScape “provides highly accurate digital models of real-world environments to support better decision-making throughout the project lifecycle,” RO said.

From 3D laser scanning to scan-to-BIM modeling and even drone-based mapping, MirrorScape helps architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) professionals gain detailed insights into site conditions “before construction even begins.”

Before that first whistle blows, RO’s clients need insight on every detail.

“Our clients don’t want more data,” Trevor Owen, who leads the MirrorScape team as reality capture manager, said in a statement. “They want better answers. That’s what we deliver.”

Per the company. MirrorScape’s digital construction solutions include:

  • ClearScan :: High-fidelity 3D laser scanning and point cloud capture
  • Scan2BIM :: Intelligent modeling of existing conditions for design and coordination
  • TopoMap :: Drone photogrammetry and aerial site mapping
  • Virtual Walkthroughs :: Immersive 360-degree tours for remote stakeholder engagement

RO said that unlike third-party vendors who are often used on projects, MirrorScape’s deep integration with construction workflows “ensures that reality capture outputs are practical, timely, and ready for use by field teams, design teams and owners alike.”

The service goes way beyond scanning.

“Anyone can scan a space,” said Chris Patton, director of virtual design and construction at RO. “We know what needs to happen after the scan.”

Since RO gave the solution a strategic soft launch, it has completed over 30 site visits and secured multiple contracts across Texas, the company said. RO said it has seen “strong adoption” of MirrorScape in DallasAustinSan Antonio, and surrounding metros.

By offering what the company calls “the clearest view of what’s next,” the service is “quickly becoming a go-to” for developers, architects, and general contractors seeking reliable digital construction solutions, RO said.
