Earlier this month, we told you that San Francisco-based Cruise may be expanding its robotaxi ridehailing service to Dallas. Well, get ready to be autonomously driven on Dallas streets, because the company has confirmed the news.
Cruise is a self-driving car startup that launched in 2013 and was acquired by General Motors in 2016. It recently launched its robotaxi service in Austin and says it has already driven nearly 2 million “driverless miles” in San Francisco, Austin, and Phoenix.
The company began offering “fully driverless service” in its robotaxis to public riders in San Francisco last January. In late April, Cruise co-founder and CEO Kyle Vogt announced on Twitter that his robotaxi service “is now running 24/7 across all of San Francisco.”
Further Texas expansion to begin in Houston and Dallas
Yesterday, Vogt tweeted that Cruise “will go live in Houston and Dallas in the next few months. Supervised autonomous driving will start in Houston in a few days, with Dallas to follow soon after.”
Anna Haase, a senior communications manager at Cruise, said the expansion will begin in Houston with a safety driver behind the wheel “as we finetune our generalizable AI technology to understand the nuances and unique elements of the city, with Dallas to follow shortly after.”
“Our guiding mission has always been to improve road safety, reduce emissions, and reduce congestion with our driverless ride-hail service in cities, which is where we’ll see the most significant positive impact the soonest,” Haase added. “Houston and Dallas are committed to reducing traffic deaths as part of their Vision Zero commitments, and we’re excited to operate in and partner with these new communities in this shared mission.”
