Austin-based Circular Services has broken ground on its new state-of-the-art recycling facility in Frisco, a 120,000-square-foot, $61 million materials recovery facility that will serve McKinney, Frisco, and surrounding communities.
The company said the facility will enhance recycling infrastructure and support “local sustainability efforts” in the area.
“This project represents a major step forward for recycling infrastructure in North Texas,” Joaquin Mariel, chief commercial officer at Circular Services, said in a statement. “We’ve been working on this for more than a decade, recognizing both the opportunity and the need for enhanced recycling infrastructure in the region. With roots in Dallas since the ’90s, we remain committed to advancing North Texas’ circular economy. By integrating the latest innovations in recycling technology with a strong focus on employee wellbeing and community engagement, we’re dedicated to making this facility a model for sustainability and efficiency.”
During a groundbreaking ceremony this week, remarks were made by Mariel; Luke Kingham, principal at KDW, the firm that designed and is building the facility; Frisco Mayor Jeff Cheney, and McKinney Mayor George Fuller.
Aiming to maximize recovery rates
The company said the facility is engineered to meet the region’s diversion goals, with a focus on maximizing recovery rates, ensuring employee safety, and maintaining the highest quality standards. Designed to accommodate the region’s high population growth and business expansion, Circular Services said the facility will serve as a circularity campus, able to house a variety of material management services for municipal and commercial customers.
The company said that key features of the facility include:
- Cutting-edge sortation technology to achieve the highest recovery rates
- Energy-efficient design incorporating solar panels, passive lighting, and native landscaping
- Electric vehicle charging stations and other sustainability-focused infrastructure
- A drop-off center for residents to recycle materials outside of the residential curbside program
The company said the new facility is expected to create about 53 full-time environmental jobs and significantly contribute to the local economy. It will be operational in spring 2026, and will process single-stream recyclables for McKinney, Frisco, and other North Texas communities, prioritizing the sale of recycled commodities to North American markets, the company said.
Circular Services has more than 20 operating locations and provides holistic materials management services to municipalities and businesses across the country, keeping valuable materials in circulation and minimizing the cost and environmental impact of landfills.
