It’s been a busy month and a half for Matthew Myers, the new dean of the Southern Methodist University’s Cox School of Business.
Danielle Abril of D CEO reported that in his first 44 days of work, Myers has met with Dallas-Fort Worth business executives, getting to know the area and figuring out how the school fits into the development of the region’s workforce of tomorrow.
Myers concluded that the business school will need to adjust how it approaches education because the North Texas workforce, corporate demography, and business needs increasingly are more tech- and innovation-driven.
“In the business community, expectations are high, so the expectations on us are high.”

“In the business community, expectations are high, so the expectations on us are high,” Myers told D CEO. “A lot of this is figuring out new ways to compete … and tech [is a] big part of that.”
Myers said that many companies, no matter their size, are seeking new ways to innovate. That means businesses need to hire people with multidisciplinary backgrounds.
He assumed his new duties on Aug. 1, replacing Albert W. Niemi Jr., who had been dean of the school since 1997. Niemi transitioned to full-time teaching.
D CEO reported that with large companies such as Toyota entering North Texas and Amazon looking for a location to build a second headquarters, the need for multidisciplinary workers is growing.
Myers said SMU will respond to businesses’ needs by offering more diverse curricula and degrees.
