The ultra-fast 1-gigabit internet has reached 50,000 new locations in Southern Dallas via AT&T, Dallas Business Journal reported.
The Dallas-based telecommunication company spent more than $2.7 billion on network upgrades in North Texas in recent years.
Another 10,000 locations will have high-speed fiber by the end of the year. It’s fast enough to download 25 songs in one second or a 90-minute high-definition movie in less than 34 seconds. Streaming, teleconferencing, uploading, and gaming are also improved with faster Internet.
This fulfills a promise made by AT&T to bring high-speed networks to that portion of Dallas.
AT&T also announced this week that it plans to acquire Straight Path Communications for $1.6 billion. The move is expected to bolster AT&T’s plans to launch a 5G network that’s capable of handling enormous amounts of data. That could be critical as smart cities, virtual and augmented reality, and connected cars gain popularity.
