Irving's Heidelberg Materials Selected by the EPA for Up to $5M Environmental Project

Irving-based Heidelberg Materials North America has been selected to receive up to $5 million in funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to create a robust, web-based tool that can help ready-mix concrete, cement, and aggregate facilities to quickly produce high-quality Environmental Product Declarations.

“With this funding, Heidelberg Materials can accelerate the push for more sustainable construction materials and transparency across the industry while also helping our customers make more informed decisions when choosing products with a lower carbon footprint,” Chris Ward, president and CEO of Heidelberg Materials North America, said in a statement.

Heidelberg said the grants are part of EPA’s Reducing Embodied Greenhouse Gas Emissions for Construction Materials and Products Grant.

Heidelberg was among 38 grant recipients across the country, totaling nearly $160 million, to support efforts to report and reduce climate pollution from the manufacturing of construction materials and products, the company said.

The company said the grant highlights its ongoing leadership in decarbonizing the industry and reflects Heidelberg’s commitment to growing its portfolio of more sustainable products, digital technologies, and customer-focused solutions.

Heidelberg Materials North America is part of Heidelberg Materials, one of the world’s largest integrated manufacturers of building materials and solutions.

Strategic acquisitions in North Texas and Pennsylvania

Also this week, Heidelberg Materials North America said it has agreed to buy Highway Materials Inc., one of the largest independent aggregates and asphalt producers in the Greater Philadelphia market.

The company said that included with this acquisition are four crushed stone quarries, nine hot-mix asphalt plants, two clean fill operations, a concrete recycling facility, a construction services business, and more than 350 employees.

“The addition of the Highway Materials business, with its broad range of products and more than 80 years of history in Pennsylvania, is a great opportunity to strengthen the company’s aggregate reserves in this core market while also growing our recycling operations,” Matteo Rozzanigo, president of the Northeast Region for Heidelberg Materials North America.

Earlier this month, Heidelberg acquired Victory Rock, a North Texas producer of high-quality aggregates for concrete and asphalt as well as other related products with two well-positioned quarries in the greater Texas Triangle. Victory Rock is based in Gordon, Texas in Palo Pinto County.

“The acquisition of Victory Rock further solidifies our existing footprint in Texas and expands our reach in the key growth markets of Austin, Killeen/Temple, and Fort Worth,” Chris Hobby, president of the Southwest Region for Heidelberg Materials North America, said in a statement.

With these acquisitions plus the previously announced acquisition of Texas-based Aaron Materials, Heidelberg Materials North America has strengthened its materials and recycling businesses in its core markets of Texas and Pennsylvania.

The company said the purchase price for these transactions totaled roughly $380 million with a combined expected post synergies EBITDA of around $50 million.
