Global telecom equipment manufacturer and platform support provider DASAN Zhone Solutions, better known as DZS, will move its Oakland headquarters and open a new Engineering Center of Excellence in Plano.

Of the decision, CEO Yung Kim cited the region’s “strong pool of world-class engineering talent” who are leading advanced communications technology innovations, especially those in “the most exciting fields of next generation wireless and network abstraction and virtualization.” DZS employs more than 700 people.

“While we will continue to have a presence in Silicon Valley, this move marks an important evolution in our company’s history,” he said. “We are excited to leverage the resources that this area has to offer as we strive for new levels of agility and efficiency in delivering leading-edge solutions to our customers.”

DZS aims to help meet the growing need for reliable, ultra-fast broadband that can stand up to heavy demands, Kim said in a statement. The company specializes in hyper-connected platforms and 5G technology, working with over 900 service providers in 80 countries. The new engineering center will focus on 5G connectivity, software defined access (SDN), network functions virtualization (NFV), and next generation fiber access.

In addition to the strong pool of communications and software engineering talent in the Dallas area, officials said the move would lower the company’s fixed costs and provide good access to customers throughout the Americas.

Dallas-Fort Worth is already home to the world headquarters of AT&T and the North American headquarters for Ericsson, and has several test sites for new 5G technology, including Verizon’s Hidden Ridge in Irving and AT&T’s 5G Evolution community at Frisco Station.
