The Last Word: On The Spark Makerspace at the University of North Texas

At the University of North Texas' Willis Library in Denton, you can find lots of books. But something else is getting checked out: The Spark, one of three makerspaces operated by the university. Open to all UNT students, faculty, and staff, The Spark offers a long list of high-tech tools that can be accessed after training—including 3D printers, laser cutters, a computer numerical control mill, sewing and embroidery machines, tools for science and pottery projects, and more. Audio-visual gear and power tools at The Spark can be borrowed as well.

The $3 million gift from Satish and Yasmin Gupta will support student scholarships and create a new career center at UNT at Frisco. UNT President Neal Smatresk said the transformative gift "will serve as a catalyst in our ongoing mission to extend UNT at Frisco’s reach and impact."

Longtime University of North Texas faculty leader Audhesh Paswan has been named as dean of New College at the UNT at Frisco campus.
“Audhesh has considerable industry experience and a diverse wealth of knowledge that will be crucial to our continued success with the new UNT at Frisco branch campus,” UNT President Neal Smatresk said in a statement....

Following a ribbon-cutting ceremony last week, classes opened today at the University of North Texas at Frisco's first permanent campus building, Frisco Landing. The $100 million, 135,000-square-foot building will be home to many of UNT at Frisco's 2,500 students. Its collaborative design includes 69 "huddle rooms," interactive classrooms, and more. Here's a look both outside and in.
