3 Years Ahead of Schedule, SMU Raises More than $1.64B in Its ‘SMU Ignited’ Fundraising Campaign

SMU said that with more than 67,500 donors, volunteers, and supporters, the campaign surpassed its $1.5 billion goal three years ahead of schedule. The university joins several elite universities that have concluded fundraising campaigns totaling $1.5 billion or more—including fellow ACC members Stanford, Duke, and Miami.

President R. Gerald Turner will transition to president emeritus whenever the next president of SMU takes office, likely on June 1, 2025. SMU said that Turner’s leadership has driven the academic and reputational transformation of the university.

Knox has several decades of noted leadership experience in amusement parks, the restaurant industry, and oil & gas, having served as the general partner, CEO, or chairman of multiple companies. The prominent alumnus and longtime SMU supporter said he hopes his support of the university’s campaign, SMU Ignited: Boldly Shaping Tomorrow, will encourage others to participate.
