A five-year NSF award to the Center for Wind Energy Science, Technology, and Research supports new work using AI to reduce turbine defects, improve reliability, and strengthen the U.S. energy grid.
The breakthrough could impact industries from aerospace to energy. “This new method can revolutionize the material science field,” says lead researcher Amin Salehi-Khojin.
The lightweight, recyclable material can be printed into complex shapes—including a balloon dog—and shows potential for use in helmets, insulation, and more. The research explores a method still largely untapped in commercial manufacturing.
A team from Dallas College reached the finals for its AMBER autonomous fire-detection system, which uses drones to alert farmers and local authorities about fire risks. The team will join 11 other finalists at an "Innovation Boot Camp" in Washington, D.C. before a final pitch decides who's No. 1.
Electrical Engineering Professor Yan Wan has received $800,000 in National Science Foundation funding to develop an open-networked airborne computing platform for drones used by first responders. Networking a system of "robots in the air" can help find disaster victims, guide rescuers, and more. Her work could also be used for drone delivery and other commercial applications, UTA says.
The project will look at the particular challenges Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and Native Pacific Islander students face. The research team plans to develop strategies to recruit and retain more Indigenous students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines.
