Sonara Health Gets $2.5M NIDA Grant to Advance Remote Methadone Treatment

The $2.5 million Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant awarded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse will fund the second phase of Sonara's Remote Observed Methadone Evaluation study, the company said.

Dallas-based Berkshire, innovating for improved patient wellness with personalized drug dispensing technology, has been granted a total of $2 million across two phases. This funding will aid the development and eventual introduction of their tech to provide opioid users at-home access to vital methadone treatment.

Berkshire's COPA System delivers automated at-home methadone doses to treat people with opioid use disorder. The computerized device offers biometric screening and real-time remote monitoring as it "accurately and securely" dispenses the medication. This can help patients avoid having to travel to clinics and wait in line for their treatment—often every single day.
"These are people who want to get over their addiction," says president and CEO John Timberlake, who believes COPA can "help these patients maintain their jobs and get back into society."
