The global real estate development firm founded by Jack Matthews has bought another former Sears site—this time, a 2 million-square-foot complex on a 38-acre tract near downtown. The project could open the door to a new chapter in the Cedars, shaped by input from residents, investors, and city leaders.
Mill City 50, a 50-home affordable housing community planned for a neighborhood in Southern Dallas, is slated to have its first 10 homes hit the market in early 2024. It will be the result of the project leadership of Brown-Key, whose company is a joint venture between Matthews Southwest and Dallas nonprofit Urban Specialists Inc.
The award signifies "the start of the start of the construction" on a major new city attraction, says Council Member Jesse Moreno. The $1.2 billion Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Master Plan includes a massive, architecturally striking expanded center and a deck park over I-30. The city believes it could spur exciting new development all around the site as well.
